Region 8-5A 2021 Preview

Published on

By Carter Mansfield

Most regions that include Shelby County programs have a number of unknowns going into 2021, due those programs not being able to play in 2020, and Region 8-5A is no different. Even with those unknowns, this is a very deep region with lots of talented teams and players. Teams in this region include Brighton, Dyer County, Kingsbury, Memphis Central, Munford, Memphis Overton, and Southwind. Let’s get into the preview.

Brighton

Key Returning Players: QB Nick Harvell, RB Ty Stark, WR Tyler Todd

Key Losses: LB Gavin Haynes, LB Levi Latimer

2020 Record: 7-6

Brighton returns a very solid group of players from their 2020 squad, including running back Ty Stark and quarterback Nick Harvell. The Cardinals should have no problems offensively, but are losing a lot of production and experience on the defensive side of the ball. If players can step up on the defensive side of the ball for Brighton, they should be a dangerous team when playoff time comes around.

Dyer County

Key Returning Players: RB Bralyn Taylor, WR Adarius Liggon, OL Cole Horner

Key Losses: QB/DB Josh Stewart, LB Caleb Briscoe, WR Darius Lovins

2020 Record: 7-5

Dyer County returns a lot of talent that will make them one of the region’s top teams going into 2021. Players like Bralyn Taylor and Adarius Liggon will be major weapons for the Choctaws on the offensive side of the ball, with several key players returning on the defensive side of the ball as well. Expect Dyer County to compete for a region title in 2021.

Kingsbury

Key Returning Players: QB Tremayne Cross, WR Muhammed Sowe, DB Robert Taylor

Key Losses: N/A

2020 Record: N/A

Kingsbury is one of the teams in this region that did not play in 2020, as Shelby County schools decided not to play due to COVID-19. Quarterback Tremayne Cross showed a lot of promise for the Falcons as a sophomore in 2019, and should carry the offensive load going into the 2021 season. I have Kingsbury finishing last in the region in 2021, but I would not be surprised at all if they won a game or two in the region.

Memphis Central

Key Returning Players: WR Quincy Briggs, WR Jalen Dale, QB Law Wright

Key Losses: N/A

2020 Record: N/A

Even though Memphis Central did not get to play in the 2020 season, that won’t stop the Warriors from being one of the region’s top teams in 2021. Central will be loaded on offense with players such as power-five wide receiver Quincy Briggs and quarterback Law Wright. The Warriors are my pick to win the region in 2021.

Munford

Key Returning Players: RB Auvic White, DB Icarius Hodgin, WR Jace Hodgin

Key Losses: QB Jaxon O’Neal, WR Traveon Hawkins, OL Miguel Sanchez

2020 Record: 7-4

Munford won the Region 8-5A title in 2020 over Brighton, and will look to defend that title in 2021. The Cougars return both the region’s overall player of the year, running back Auvic White, and the region’s defensive player of the year, defensive back Icarius Hodgin. I have Munford finishing second in the region, but don’t be surprised if they end up winning the region title.

Memphis Overton

Key Returning Players: DL Trey Thomas III, LB Chris Dennis, QB Damion Mitchell

Key Losses: N/A

2020 Record: N/A

Overton will be a young and inexperienced team going into 2021, but has some real talent on both sides of the ball. Damion Mitchell will be one of the region’s best quarterbacks this season, in my opinion, and will be the go-to-guy for the Wolverines offensively. I don’t have Overton making the playoffs due to their inexperience, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a push for one of the final playoff spots.

Southwind

Key Returning Players: DB Xavier White, OL Dorein Greer

Key Losses: N/A

2020 Record: N/A

Southwind has a number of unknowns, as most Shelby County programs will, going into 2021. The Jaguars had a very talented team in 2019, but will return almost no one that saw significant playing time from that team. Even with that, Southwind has playoff potential, and I have them finishing fifth in the region this season.
